… And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8, NASB)
For Keith Price, serving as a tutor at Cornerstone Prep/Lester Prep for more than six years is a way for him to live out the tenets of Micah 6:8. “For me, serving at the school is a way to do justice, to love and to be humbled by what the Lord is already doing at the school,” he said. “My family and I are beyond blessed. Serving is a way to give back.”
Keith tutors on everything from reading and math to behavior. The dominant answer to his research into the best thing a tutor can do is to consistently show up.
“I give a listening ear, share a ‘dad’ joke and just spend time with them. While I am not a teacher, it became very clear that all that was needed was time. Everyone reading this can read and is therefore fully qualified to help at the school!”
Last year, Keith added a project to his weekly time at the school. The students eat lunch early in the day and do not have a snack on Monday. The school secured a grant to provide snacks on the other days, but Monday was not included. Keith reached out to the classroom sponsors and asked them to supply a snack for their classes every Monday.
For the remainder (13 classrooms) he raised money and purchased Cheez-Its for more than 200 students each week (6 cases/per week). “It became a family affair in that my daughter Sarah (14) would sort and bag the snacks into classrooms. I would deliver them to the school every Tuesday,” he said. “I can’t do that this year, and I fear that the kids will go without.”
Get your Sunday school class involved
Keith encourages others to serve because the need is great and the joy that awaits is greater.
There are many ways to serve:
- Show up once a week to read to a child, to help them with their sight words, or to help them draw a picture.
- Make sure students have a snack on Monday.
- Help in the office or with the teachers.
- Be a classroom sponsor. This is a great way for a Sunday school class to have tons of fun. Keith’s Sunday school class is in its fourth year of hosting monthly birthday parties and a huge Christmas event.
