Earlier this year, Christ Church gave faithfully to help catalyze specific projects developed by each of our affiliated ministry partners to continue to develop the neighborhood of Binghampton alongside the community.
SOS Builds is a collaboration between SOS, the Binghampton Development Corporation, and the Carpenter Art Garden that provides after-school educational, character, and leadership enrichment for Binghampton middle-schoolers through hands-on construction training.
To help provide vocational preparation and training among the urban youth of Binghampton, SOS Builds is raising up the next generation of leaders from within their own community.
And since more than 60 percent of graduates from the year-long SOS Academy program stay in ministry in urban neighborhoods in Memphis, SOS Builds will also provide an entry point that leads to summer camper, summer staff and hopefully later an SOS Academy intern for students at Cornerstone Prep.
As we near the close of SOS Builds’s first year, the first cohort has already completed a number of smaller projects, but their crowning achievement so far has only just completed the planning stage.
On December 10, I had the pleasure of visiting SOS for a presentation put on by the entire SOS Builds team in which they unveiled their design for a clubhouse behind the Purple House at the Carpenter Art Garden.
For several months, the SOS Builds team has been learning from and working with Fleming Architects to develop their plan–check it out:
Soon SOS Builds will build and install the clubhouse at the Art Garden. It will be quite a fun addition to all of the good things happening there, and it will be a monument to the hard work and creativity of these wonderful kids.
