This annual fall retreat is a favorite among both parents and our special needs friends. It gives the caregivers a night to themselves and our friends an opportunity to have a sleepover. This year’s retreat included painting, s’mores, fellowship with friends and worship music by the Memphis band Laramie.

Here’s what two volunteers said about the retreat:joy-life-901-fall-retreat-2

It was a really great experience. It was great working with our buddy Kim. She is super fun and a ball of energy! I love volunteering with the Special Needs Ministry. — Kate Floyd, pictured left with friends

Why do I volunteer with Joy 901? I have been with some of these special friends for a few years now. I started by volunteering at the very first Memphis Joy Prom, then moved to helping in their Sunday school class. It brings me joy to see them having a good time whatever we are doing, like this past weekend at the overnight retreat where we watched a movie, made s’mores and worshiped together. Seeing my friends deepens our relationship and I am doing what Pastor Shane always says “be salt and light”. –Wilson Baird
