Guest post written by CUMC member Alys Drake

When I returned to my home church after 12 years as member of a sister Methodist church across town, I felt the call to start a new United Methodist Women circle here at Christ Church.

I had the privilege of being involved in a dynamic circle at my previous church and even served as president of the unit. I wanted to share that same fellowship with women at Christ Church who are seeking God through missions. I had no idea if anyone would be interested in joining me.

Thankfully, on October 9, the newest circle of the UMW at Christ Church was installed with 18 members! I have heard from many of our members that they are so happy to have this group at this time in their lives and I am grateful to have these amazing women join together.

The name we chose for ourselves is Goodness. Galatians 5:22-23 says “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Goodness is defined as moral excellence or admirableness or that which is pleasing, valuable or useful.

As women, we strive to be valuable or useful. Goodness is directly from God, as He is good. Our goodness as Christian women dwells in us with the Holy Spirit. Goodness often gets over looked and thought less of because it seems so simple, yet it’s the foundation for what God wants us to express. Inward goodness leads to outward kindness (another Fruit of the Spirit).

We see our Circle of Goodness as a group of Christian women sharing God’s goodness with each other, our church, and our community. We feel this reflects who we are trying to be as a group and allow us to focus on our call.

Any woman can join any one of the 11 circles at Christ Church, even if she is not a member of our church. Membership is open to the community at large, and General Meetings are open to all, members and guests.  General Meetings that are Luncheons are on second Tuesdays, and other General Meetings are on third Tuesdays.

UMW President, Lady Nellis, has been extremely helpful and encouraging throughout this process and I will always be thankful for her support. If you are interested in joining a circle, please contact Lady for details on each circle and she can direct you to the right group for your needs.
