Eight nations were represented this past Saturday, April 12 as Serving & Outreach joined with fellow sponsors World Relief Memphis, Barnhart, FCA, and Kyle Rote, Jr. for the inaugural Memphis Cup of Nations Soccer Tournament & Festival.
Hosted by Christian Brothers University, Signaigo Field buzzed with excitement as teams representing Mexico, Honduras, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Laos, and Burundi played all morning and into the afternoon for the title.
Mexico defeated Honduras in the final match, 4-3, in what proved to be a close match between two equally talented teams.
“Both teams left it all on the field and gave Memphis a great exhibition of international class soccer.” said Kyle Rote Jr, one of the tournament organizers and a former North American Soccer League professional himself.
Jan Averwater, Director of Athletics at Christ Church and main organizer of the event, was very pleased with the outcome: “What a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of Memphis’ international neighbors,” she said.
The weather was beautiful, the atmosphere was electric, and great fun was had by all. This is definitely one of the most promising new events that Christ Church will be putting on annually.
Bring your families out next year, and even help us make it even better! Contact Jan Averwater at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’re interested in giving a helping hand.
