February 9th-11th (Friday-Monday) our sixth graders attended our annual Confirmation retreat. This retreat is a time for our confirmands to deepen relationships with each other, their 10th grade leaders, and God through worship and classes. Friday night and Saturday morning we shared meals and worshiped together, and then had class time. As with any middle school group, fun is a huge part of what we do as it draws students in and helps them to connect. This retreat is no different. On a very rainy Saturday afternoon our students enjoyed a climbing wall, a zip line, and a giant swing. Students had a great time, and several leaders even got in on the action! We worked up a big appetite for the yummy meal we had that night.
Saturday night we had more class, and then late-night games. In the end, the girls claimed victory as one of the girls’ 10th grade leaders was the last person standing! After games, we headed back to the cabins to pack and sleep in hopes that each confirmand would be (somewhat) rested for worship and Communion the next morning.
After breakfast Sunday morning, we again worshiped together and then took part in Communion. Communion is the culmination of our retreat as we prepare to enter the world closer to God and ready to live out this faith we are affirming. We arrived back at the church around noon on Sunday, exhausted but grateful for a wonderful weekend and for a God who is faithful to meet us where we are, whether in worship or play, sunshine or pouring rain.
Back at home this week, our sixth graders complete their Confirmation classes in preparation of Confirmation Sunday on March 4th. Our students are looking forward to Confirmation Sunday and rejoining the 7th and 8th grade students in Middle School Refuge next week!
