Guest post by Mackay Lee, Middle School Director

It’s 7 p.m. on a Sunday night. Students are gathering outside of the chapel, anxiously awaiting the doors to open so that they can rush in to get the best seat. The doors finally open – students storm in. The music is pumping, and colored lights dance around the dimly lit chapel. It’s the sign that BreakThru ’19 has officially begun.

BreakThru is a winter retreat that holds a special place in the hearts of Christ Church students, parents and staff. Tucked away in the woods of Pulaski, MS, at Camp Timbercreek, BreakThru provides an opportunity to literally “retreat,” away from distractions, cell phones and good cell service. Students instead are able to enter into a time of fun, laughter, connection, community and a sensing of God’s presence. The theme this year was True North, and allowing ourselves to disconnect for a moment allowed us to reconnect with Christ. Many shifted their paths to point them toward True North – God’s heart.

As students began to get settled in the chapel, worship songs began to play, and the voices of students and adult leaders singing praises to God began to swell. As we moved from worship into a time of teaching, the speaker challenged students to not be the same when they left BreakThru but to live a transformed life. We capped the worship sessions by putting this challenge into practice by cleaning the shoes of others, while also affirming who God had created them to be. It was an absolutely powerful and moving moment to see students bending down to clean the feet of others!

In the midst of these powerful, transformative moments, students and leaders alike had the chance to have A LOT of fun! From crazy relay races, running through inflatable obstacle courses, buying 100 sodas from the snack shack, to playing GaGa Ball for three straight hours during free time, BreakThru 2019 was no doubt one of the most fun and most memorable!

We are excited to see all of the seeds that were sown at BreakThru grow in the hearts of our students, and we already have our eyes set on BreakThru 2020!
