Hundreds of students carrying backpacks made their way to the front of the church Sunday to receive a prayer for blessing for the new school year. CUMC Senior Pastor Rev. Shane Stanford says,

We want to encourage teachers, administrators, school staff members and even our school board members by asking God to give them fresh insight and wisdom for the upcoming year. We want them all to know that they matter – to God and to us as a church.

Memphis mom Cameron Stimson shares her reaction to the “Blessing of the Backpacks” service.

It’s a big deal for the kids at our church. They get to bring their new backpacks to church and go up before the church to be prayed over. All the teachers and administrators are also asked to stand. It’s a big deal for parents, teachers, administrators, and everyone else because we love our kids and want the absolute best for them. Though it may be cliché, they ARE our future.
